Textual Criticism

How sure are we that we even know what the original authors wrote?

Textual Criticism

Our understanding of Christianity is based on the New Testament, written in an ancient language, hand copied, and passed down over 2,000 years. How sure are we that we even know what the original authors wrote? What witnesses have our English translators used? This seven-week course, using video lectures by Dr. Dan Wallace, will answer these questions and address critics’ claims that too often can lead to a crisis of faith. Explaining contemporary scholarly resources and methods, Dr. Wallace realistically addresses the variants seen in the historical record and frankly takes on the most challenging issues.

By the end of the workshop, you will:
  • Recognize basic historical manuscripts and how they were passed down.
  • Make sense of study notes in your Bible referring to various “witnesses”.
  • Be able to explain to others why you trust in God’s Word.
  • Week 1: Introduction, Textual Variants
  • Week 2: Ancient Sources – Back to the Roots
  • Week 3: Scribal Corruptions – What Went wrong?
  • Week 4: Famous Manuscripts
  • Week 5: Historical Breakthroughs in Understanding the Bible

  • Week 7: Famous Textual Problems and Wrap Up
